![]() ![]() The 360-degree booming sound is still a plus and the IP67 waterproof and dust-proof rating is the cherry on top. The UE Boom 3 made a debut in early 2019 and still reigning on the charts of top recommendations. While JBL Flip 5 is one of the newest speakers from JBL, the UE Boom 3 is slightly older. Over the years, these two companies have churned out a handful of popular and well-made speakers. For everyone else, however, we think the JBL Charge 3 is the way to go.Both JBL and Ultimate Ears or UE are no strangers to wireless portable Bluetooth speakers. Still, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth buying the UE Boom 2 - if you’re looking for an omnidirectional speaker or a more simplistic design, then the UE Boom 2 may be the speaker for you. While the UE Boom 2 offers some pretty nice features, the JBL Charge 3 offers a longer battery life and a better sound-quality. In general, we think both of these speakers sound pretty good - but while the omni-directionality of the UE Boom 2 is nice, it doesn’t beat the loudness and more balanced sound of the JBL Charge 3. That’s not true for the JBL Charge 3, which offers plenty of bass, while still retaining a decent sound quality in the mid range and high end. The UE Boom 2’s sound is pretty balanced, especially in the mid range and even in the high-end, though for some the bass may be lacking a little. The UE Boom 2 certainly can get loud, but the JBL Charge 3 can get louder. The JBL Charge 3, on the other hand, is directional - meaning it’s better suited near a wall or facing the group of people.Īpart from that, however, JBL may be the winner. What that means is that you can put the speaker in an upright position, then be anywhere around it and still hear decent sound. The UE Boom 2 offers a feature that the JBL Charge 3 doesn’t - its sound is omnidirectional. Of course, while a great design is nice, the most important thing to consider when buying a new speaker is how it sounds - and the speakers both sound pretty good. What’s not doing to personal preference is the fact that the JBL Charge 3 offers an extra three hours of battery life - which isn’t small. The two speakers offer a slightly different design, and when it comes to look, it’s down to personal preference. You might want to use these speakers for things like going to the beach or at the pool - and thankfully they both offer an IPX7 water-resistance level, which means that they’ll survive being submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The UE Boom 2 is rated at offering up to 15 hours of battery life, while the JBL Charge 3 steps things up to 20 hours - though those times will obviously vary depending on use. When it comes to battery life, there’s a clear winner. There are decidedly more buttons on the top of this speaker, but some may prefer the labelled buttons rather than the tap controls on the UE Boom 2. The speaker is clearly designed to be used horizontally, and features battery indicator lights along the bottom, as well as volume, power, and playback controls on the top. The JBL Charge 3 isn’t as minimalistic, but it still looks pretty great. It’s a pretty nice, smart way to control the speaker. To control playback, you won’t use any real buttons - instead you’ll tap on the speaker. You’ll also find a power button and a Bluetooth pairing button. Those are the biggest buttons on the device, but they’re not the only ones. On the top of the UE Boom 2 you’ll find two large buttons - volume up, and volume down. Safe to say, no matter what color you’re looking for you should find something you like from both of these speakers. The UE Boom 2 comes in a hefty 10 colors, while the JBL Charge 3 comes in six. The speakers both come in a few different colors. They both offer a cylindrical design in similar sizes - though the UE Boom 2 looks to be slightly more minimalistic and simple. The first thing you’ll notice about any new product is its design, and both the UE Boom 2 and the JBL Charge 3 look pretty nice. ![]()
